Our
History
Grants Smoked Foods was established in 1985 to
produce premium Scottish salmon primarily for the
wholesale market. The business has grown
substantially over recent years and now supplies
customers in foodservice, manufacturing and retail
outlets in the UK and Europe.
In 2001 Grants was purchased by Cumbrian Seafoods,
which gave substantial new investment required to
upgrade the facility and invest in new machinery.
This has guaranteed the consistent efficient
production of the highest quality products
delivered on time every time including peak
trading periods.
Our products
The 40,000 square feet plant in Maryport, Cumbria
is now the most modern salmon smoking facility in
the UK. Our company mission of ‘setting the
industry standard’ has consistently delivered
Efsis higher-level and now A Grade accreditation.
Our company is also a Manchester Beth Din Kosher
Association Approved Supplier.
Grants only source salmon from accredited
companies with sound animal welfare practices. All
suppliers are subject to an annual audit to ensure
the highest standards maintained. Salmon is
sourced only from accredited suppliers. This
enables us to take advantage of the highest
quality available.
Only the finest fresh Scottish salmon are selected

Our Parent Company
Cumbrian Seafoods is a privately owned company,
which was established in Maryport in 1997. It
provides a range of fresh fish, mackerel, herring,
coated and added value products to Morrison’s,
Tesco, Iceland and Somerfield, wholesale and
foodservice companies.
Peter Vassallo, its founder has gone from being a
small fishmonger to being a large fishmonger,
employing over 700 people. Setting rather than
following industry standards is what Peter has
always aimed to do, and in setting up Cumbrian
Seafoods this was one of his first objectives. “I
have always advocated being the best rather than
the biggest. Setting the industry standard in
product quality, operational efficiency, value and
customer service is the direction I have
constantly encouraged my team towards. It is a
journey that is never completed, because of course
the game moves on and customer requirements become
more demanding”.
The company is closely involved with the local
community, appropriately given it’s position as
Maryport’s largest employer. The year after
acquiring Grants, our smoked salmon for Wm.
Morrison Supermarkets came top in a taste panel
chaired by Antony Worrall Thompson for the Sunday
Express, against the products of other major
supermarkets.
Supplying the large variety of customers we have
is demanding, we are only as good as our last
delivery, so our goal has to be getting it right
first time, every time. It helps enormously that
one of our main strengths is our sourcing
expertise. Because we are processing so many
different fish products from all over the world
our supply lines are incredibly complex.
New product development is another important
company strength, whether it is in sea fish,
freshwater fish, shellfish or indeed packaging we
are constantly innovating.
We are succeeding as a business because we care!!
